We oppose this proposed amendment.

We are extremely concerned by the recent reports regarding improper tire storage and the Ministry’s finding that William Day Construction exceeded its approved storage limits. Given these recent issues, we do not believe this is the appropriate time to expand the company’s storage capacity from 5,000 tires to 100,000 tires.

This proposal appears to reward non-compliance instead of addressing the underlying problems within the tire recycling system. The growing tire backlog across Northern Ontario is a serious environmental and public safety concern that requires responsible management and stronger oversight.

Residents have already witnessed large tire accumulations throughout the Sudbury area, including along the Kingsway and on the company’s property itself. The scale of these stockpiles raises legitimate concerns regarding fire hazards, environmental impacts, and the company’s ability to properly manage such a significant increase in tire volume.

We believe the Province should focus on improving enforcement, accountability, and long-term recycling solutions before approving major storage expansions. At minimum, stricter oversight and demonstrated compliance should be required before any amendment of this scale is considered.

Thank you for providing the public with the opportunity to comment on this.
