In my view there are two recommended uses for biogas. One is to use biogas directly for combined heat and power applications, which will ensure more than 80% of the energy content is utilized. The 2nd option is to create RNG and introduce the gas into the natural gas distribution system to displace natural gas. To utilize biogas for vehicle fuel is a very inefficient use of the gas. For example, a typical vehicle with an internal combustion engine will use about 0.5 kWh of input energy for every km driven. An equivalent electric vehicle will use about 0.2 kWh of input energy for every km driven. As the transportation sector is transitioning to being all electric, the logical conclusion must be that investment in infrastructure to accommodate the use of biogas for vehicle fuel is the least efficient use of biogas available.
