Most of my life I have not been politically active. I started writing letters in the last year or so. I have taken the time to research climate change. Everyone has heard about climate change but I believe most people don't understand the severity or urgency of the situation. I now try to discuss climate change with every person I interact with. Most people are not fully aware. The ones that are, are horribly disappointed with this government.
I am so disappointed in this government. We are headed for a climate crisis and yet this government continues to push for regulations that push us faster towards this global crisis rather than taking adequate steps to address it and minimize the devastating effects.
-getting rid of the environmental commissioner
-cancelling the cap and trade
-fighting the federal government on the carbon tax
-Bill 66, schedule 10-thank goodness you listened to the people on that one
-weak environmental plan
-and now this. Rather than intensifying density targets, you want to lower the density targets and make it easier for municipalities to pave over wetlands, forests and farmland. Change the name to unmanaged growth , but urban sprawl is still just that. Environmental sustainability-apparently different people have different definitions and you have not defined yours. So how is that measured? Perhaps that is the point. Carbon neutral or net zero carbon can be measured. (But in fact we need carbon negative)
Is this government ignorant of the urgency of climate change or just not care? This government is NOT for the people. Developers yes but Not for the people. If you were you would be moving to make much more drastic changes to move us away from fossil fuels and working to save every bit of natural heritage and farmland along with biodiversity,
I am so disappointed with this government and I am angry. I wanted the pleasure of being a grandparent and yet I know this would be selfish of me. Our young people and future generations will have to live (try to live) in the mess we are creating. This government has the power to take hope away from young people. Clearly you are doing that. But you don't have the right to.
The commitments made under the Paris Agreement are not enough. This government is taking us backwards in terms of the environment and wasting valuable time. I will continue to speak with people about climate change and encourage them to research the science themselves because governments and the media are not telling enough. Certainly they will come to the same conclusion-that this government is failing the people of Ontario.
More money won't protect people from water and food shortages.
We can't buy more farmland-we have a finite supply yet we need more farmland not less (for biofuels as well as food) and we can't tear down forests (they are carbon sinks) looking for more land for agriculture.
More money won't help if ecosystems collapse due to biodiversity loss and climatic impacts.
More money can't stop the ice sheets from melting or prevent the forest fires which are creating feedbacks that cause runaway climate change.
My hope is that more people understand climate change and demand changes (politically only and NON-violently) from our governments.
Thank you.
