I am a high school student from an Ontarian secondary school writing this letter on the my concerns over the Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan. More specifically, my distress over the extreme flexibility in the terms presented by the proposed amendments to the policy. Please do note I do not mean to offend any individual or group and apologize beforehand if anything said feels as such.
One major change is the replacement of “low density urban sprawl”, a clearly defined and used term, with "unmanaged growth” (1.1), a term that is rare and far more undefined. There was no reputable source found that has used this term for land development and does not pertain to this document. Following, the deletion and subsequent replacement of the phrase “long-term goal of net-zero” with “environmentally sustainable”(4.1). The former phrase gives a very precise indication of set goals and does not need further clarification while the latter no definitive implication is made towards benchmarks for this plan. My final noteworthy example is the amendments made to section 3.1 where in the mention of two major longstanding provincial policies over the use of a federal goal and a fairly recent provincial policy that is not widely known. This change harms the credibility and guarantee of the policy.
As I put the repercussions of this plan in mind in terms of my city I am not pleased. With my city of Brampton already overpopulated and overdeveloped from my personal experience with the severity and number of crimes increasing beyond manageability of police. Especially with the flexibility presented by these amendments similar situations can arise in other areas and increase in current areas dealing with this problem.
I do hope that you are able to comprehend and implement some solutions to the issue that I have addressed.
