I am writing in support of the Yonge-Eglinton Official Plan Amendment No. 405 (“OPA 405”) as adopted by the City of Toronto, as well as to express my concerns about the overdevelopment in Yonge-Eglinton area, especially the North East block of Yonge and Eglinton. Currently, my home is surrounded by 4 condo/apartment construction sites which include 6 high-rise buildings. Over the past 3 years, Monday to Saturday starting from 7am, I have to put up with construction noise and air pollution. During the summers, I am forced to turn on air-conditioning even when it is not that hot outside. I can't open my windows to let in fresh air because of the noise and dusts from the construction. I don't see any breaks from this noise and dust when new construction site keeps popping up. Also, this dust from construction makes my allergies more severe than before. Basically, this perpetual construction problem in Yonge-Eglinton area is affecting my health. Within the next couple of years, the 6 buildings will completed. I did not get the chance to count how many units are in total but I think that should be over 1,500 units. Currently, the sidewalks are overcrowded and the side streets often have heavy traffic, I almost got run over by cars due to impatient drivers who probably are fed up with the heavy traffic in the area. I have been pushed, shoved and got stepped on many times when I was walking on the sidewalks or crossing the busy intersections in the area. During weekdays, the sidewalks at the Yonge-Eglinton intersection often overflow with pedestrians because there is simply not enough space for everybody. With the residents from 1,500+ units moving in within the new few years, these problems of congested sidewalks and roads will only be intensified. Meanwhile, we all will be competing for water and electricity as well. In addition, the tall buildings that are planned to be put in on Broadway Ave between Yonge and Redpath will basically block off ALL the sunlight for most of the residential buildings in the area. This will force residents currently living in the area to turn on lights even during daytime. This is not good for the environment, and not fair to local residents who will have to pay for extra hydro consumed. I would greatly appreciate to have a break from the perpetual construction in the area. It would be nice if I can open my windows to let in fresh air during the day for a summer or two Even better, I get to have some natural sunlight instead of being forced to live in a home without much natural light and turn on lights and air-conditioning all the time. Imagine it is your home here and your neighbours bought out by the developers who will be building giant towers surrounding your home. How does it feel? Every morning, the dump trucks start rolling by your home at 6am. You have little natural light and you hear construction noise all the time. I understand there is a need for more housing, but does it all have to be squeezed into a tiny block? We already have many new buildings in the area that are under construction. Maybe we should wait for 5-10 years and see the proper infrastructure to catch up with the spike in population growth before considering adding more buildings in the area.
