This proposal is non-sensical and a shameful abandonment of the government's responsibility to protect species at risk. In particular, the ability to pay the government to avoid complying with species-protecting regulations is nothing more than a modern day environmental form of paying for indulgences. This government wishes to foster business, and I agree with this desire, but good businesses innovate to finds way to succeed without destroying the planet they live on. Just as the indulgences of the old Catholic church allowed sinners to continue sinning, so too would this proposal allow environmentally destructive businesses to continue destroying. Ontario's environment is too fragile and has been too heavily exploited for far too long to permit this.
