The proposed reduction of baiting distance for hunting of bears is incomprehensible.
First, baiting should be eliminated to begin with. It is like shooting fish in a bowl. We should eliminate baiting altogether and I would like to see the MNRF put forth a proposal that indicates such. These animals have young - more often with them than not (e.g. cubs stay with their mothers for 18 months) and this proposal increases an inhumane set up for bears, and an animal welfare concern for the cubs that are left as orphans, or not as experienced at taking care of themselves.
In terms of reducing a distance to be closer to trails? That is absolutely absurd. I walk many of Ontario's trails to enjoy nature and our wildlife. To have baits and lure bears near to the trails is unacceptable and a public safety risk.
I strongly urge the government to reject this proposal. As a taxpayer, user of our natural resources, and a resident of Ontario, I am deeply disappointed in our government for even considering such a request.
