Absolutely reduce the distance from so called trails. It becomes extremely difficult to bait at all with such a rule in place. Those who put this law into place made it so restrictive that it makes it much harder to hunt bears. Another non-bear hunter decision. Trails can be considered to be all over the place. Someone made this distance with the mind of keeping bait as far away as possible from everything and everyone making it so ridiculously far. Bears will come to your front door smelling food on your dinner table. They will feed at bird feeders owned by anti-hunting bird watchers, they will smell the fresh pie cooking in your kitchen. Keeping the bear population in check is not easy to do with all the restrictions and this ridiculous distance from a trail makes things even harder. It’s the hunters who try and keep the balance not the anti-hunters. On that note bird feeders outside of bear hibernation time are tremendous attractants for bears.
