I strongly oppose ERO 019-0022 which would reduce the minimum distance requirement for placement of bait from rights of way and trails for black bear hunting.
In Ontario there are many more people using wild spaces such as hikers, families, bird watchers, and dog walkers than there are hunters, so this change would put them all at risk of negative encounters with wildlife, not just bears, who are attracted to the bait.
Moreover, there will be a larger risk of more vehicle collisions with large animals, causing serious harm to the driver and passengers, animals, and the vehicles.
People use wild spaces so regulations should be put in place to protect them, not increase the risk that
they will be harmed by hunting and hunting-related activities such as baiting.
