There are not enough experienced hunters which come up to hunt black bears in nw Ontario. Having the baits closer to roads/trails will offer more danger to those who these trails recreationally. That being said, many hunters will shoot at noises, at movement and not know what’s beyond their target. Many camp owners don’t verify heir hunters have hunted before or are familiar with high powered rifles therefor just taking money, pushing them in and pushing them out for a monetary value and ultimately have inexperienced hunters in the woods. This new legislation is too dangerous for the public and for cabin owners as well as more bears will be closer and possible more human interactions. Tourist outfitters and hunters alike need and can find locations deeper in the bush to prevent these mishaps from happening. This entire new shortened distance is for more baits to be set and more people in the woods to promote more money in the area, understood. But be safe and keep it away from public trails and roads to prevent any danger from happening. It’s common sense. On the last note, in areas where public isn’t using these trails or roads regularly (boat in camps, flyout camps, etc.) this new legislative option may apply. One death is one death too many. Let’s think about this before pushing this dangerous new law. I am an avid hunter and do hunt but when I take my kid out berry picking or mushroom hunting I don’t want an inexperienced hunter aiming a rifle at me because he “heard a bear.” Think this through.
