I am concerned that Bill 108 is being rushed through too quickly. In reading the bill, particularly Schedule 11, I fear that this could seriously compromise a number of heritage sites and heritage districts as developers rush to develop land for their own gain with little thought to the welfare of the community in which they are developing. Niagara-on-the-Lake, where tourism is the major job creator, could suffer irreparable damage through development that fails to respect the heritage ambiance of the historic town. Once that heritage "feel" is gone, tourism will drop off dramatically. Hotels, wineries, stores, restaurants, and the Shaw Festival employ a huge number of people and all are dependent on the maintenance of the heritage of the historic town of Niagara. Any decisions on zoning, height and density of new structures should rest with the municipality, not the region or any more senior level of government.
