As an Ontario resident I am concerned about Bill108.
Specifically I am very worried about:
A) The shift in power from residents and their elected municpial officials to developers. Local councils and residents should have control over what gets built in their area and have the ability to negotiate funding for parks etc.. Development planning and policy should be exclusively done through municipalities with the exception being provincial development restrictions that support overall environmental protection such as greenbelt areas.
B) The potential for the reduction of environmental controls and restrictions that are currently in place for land development. Environmental controls in all areas including land development should be increasing not decreasing.
C) Changes to various Acts that would weaken the province’s endangered species protections amidst an unprecedented biodiversity crisis. We should be increasing protective measures for endangered species and preserving the natural environment in Ontario rather than reducing the measures as Bill 108 proposes to do.
I hope that the government revises Bill 108 to put the environment first and does not give developers control of land development.
