I have been in contact with Greenmantle forest inc since about 2008 with a dispute over clear cut logging taking place in Jacques Twp north of Thunder Bay. They have extensively clear cut the township effectively destroying our boreal forest and replacing it with engineered tree plantations, moose counts have dropped. We have been requesting that they leave a larger buffer around residential properties on Howcum lake road and to leave the forest in work unit 07 1A north of Howcum lake standing. This area is one that I and other residents enjoy, and have so for over 35 years. We have been pleading with Greenmantle without any success for over 10 years now to leave it alone. These people just don't get it, there is no room for human values in how Greenmantle conducts forestry planning. Speaking with Phil Brown he speaks with a cold scientific heart the various reasons or excuses to clear cut down to our property lines with no recognition of the love we have for our local forest values we enjoy. For him and Greenmantle it all about quotas and forest management, or rather mismanagement if I may say.
My question is, how do we as citizens have any say or control over logging next to our properties, and how do we direct our civil servants who work in Greenmantle to come up with a resolution that will satisfy residents living in the area? We have a wild west attitude where anything goes in the forest industry and we lost control over our local interests.
At present the logging license holder is building another road down to this proposed cut we want to stop. The wood is not of high value and has been turned down several times in the past by license holders who refused to do the cut, which is why its still standing and I am fighting for its survival.
There are plenty of opportunities to cut further north well away from residential areas.
Can you help?
