Mandatory reporting will assist managers in assessing deer populations within a given WMU. This is a good step but it will be necessary to ensure that there is sufficient incentive to ensure reporting occurs. In addition, as not everyone is honest/accurate in their reporting of deer abundance there needs to be additional sources of accurate and timely population information.
Some WMU's are large and populations within a given WMU can and do vary significantly. Should management not occur on a sub-unit basis when this occurs?
The issuance or reduction of antlerless deer tags in a given WMU is a method of controlling deer numbers. Some hunters deliberately apply for antlerless tags but refuse to shoot antlerless deer by doing so other hunters are deprived of the opportunity. An antlerless deer tag should be just that...for antlerless deer only. If hunters don't want to shoot antlerless deer then they need not apply for one.
What is being done to ensure there is a healthy sex ratio in the deer herd?
