The city I live in has many abandoned buildings. Rundown older homes, plazas and even old factory's sitting empty. They are taking up much-needed space for affordable housing. As a single parent of only one child, I struggle daily to afford our small crappy apartment that the landlords have not updated in 42 years. I work a good-paying full-time job and keep my expenses low but still struggle. I can't afford to move, to live in a nicer building or even consider buying a home. I can't even afford a car of my own and pay insurance (so very thankful to my mom).
If the rent keeps going up every year, I will become homeless in 3-5 years because my wage doesn't increase with the rent increase or with the cost of food, fuel, etc.
The old landlords with shitty buildings need to be made to fix them. The new landlords need to be given a cap based on sq footage or something. Citys should be made to have housing that costs less than 30% of my monthly net income.
If I could comfortably afford a house, a vehicle of my own, pay all my bills etc, I would spend more money elsewhere such as traveling, donate, attend local sporting events, fairs, shows, etc.
No wonder we see grandparents, parents, and grandkids all living together in a 3-5 bedroom home and running two crap vehicles on the road, cause they can't afford anything better. And the struggle continues for generations. We are losing jobs all around us and our whole neighborhood becomes dependant on Ontario Works and ODSP. And those monthly amounts are digusting. They can't afford to live well and become drug addicts and cause trouble around town.
