I have a problem with this water taking application for an aggregate licence that is over 4 decades old . The site in question is directly beside a significant wetland/core greenbelt area. By today's standards, an aggregate licence to quarry would have little to no chance of being approved for this area. The impact on wildlife is of great concern, and the removal of millions of liters of water per day is disturbing. Lafarge claims that the water is not being "taken" , however the impact on the natural flow of ground water into the aquifer is greatly affected. Increasing the water taking permit, in my opinion is a huge mistake. Even if the permit is granted, that opens up another group of issues related to blasting, noise, contamination, dust etc. It seems that the penalties for exceeding provincial limits placed on quarries(self governed) are insignificant to the operators. We can not base permits and licence limits on decades old conditions, and need to apply current environmental concerns and applications to govern any future impact. By today's standards and very real potential negative environmental consequences, I feel that at minimum, a Tier 3 Environmental Assessment should be completed. Water and environment should be a huge priority for future generations.
