Thank you for the opportunity to comment on proposed changes to the Environmental Registry of Ontario.
I applaud the changes to ensure increased engagement with Indigenous Communities.
I oppose the changes allowing municipalities greater control in minimizing the importance of local cultural heritage assets and values.
Wawa is finally recognizing economic benefits to recognizing, celebrating, preserving and promoting their cultural heritage. Local entrepreneurs have started providing guided hikes focused on Wawa's connection to A.Y. Jackson and the Group of Seven. The Town of Wawa has recently developed a unique community cultural display in the form of 30+ heritage doors throughout the community which recognize the significance of residents and Canadian icons to Wawa's growth and development.
Why is the value of cultural heritage resources being characterized and referred to as a "barrier" to development? Our cultural and natural heritage is the only authentic representation of our uniqueness and our connection to the land and the region. These assets are providing our communities with economic value as well as value of place.
