1) North York needs a North-South and East-West grid of protected bike lanes. Recent meetings have involved Re-Imagining Yonge Street. But a cyclist can't get to Yonge Street in a direct manner from the East or the West without meandering through side-streets or park trails.
The grid must allow the cyclist to cross the DVP and 401 safely.
The grid must allow the cyclist to get to Toronto from North York in a direct North South Route. For example, to get to Logan and Danforth from Don Mills Road in North York, a cyclist taking park trails must go east all the way to Stan Watlow Park, exit at Cosburn Avenue and head south on Woodbine Avenue; or go west , exit at Pottery Road and climb up the narrow single lane road with sharrows to head south at Broadview. Taking roads from Don Mills, the cyclist would have to struggle through the speeding traffic of Overlea before arriving at the bike lanes on Millwood.
2) All the road fatalities of 2017 were caused by negligent use of motor-vehicles. Many of the fatalities were motorists and their own passengers. The Mayor's telling motorists to be more alert does nothing to achieve the Vision Zero goal.
Here are my proposals to reduce road fatalities and injuries to cyclists.
a) Highway Traffic Act to disallow lane sharing of motor vehicle and bicycle. Motor vehicles must change lanes to pass a bicycle, not passing in the same lane. Side-by-side cycling is safer than single-file cycling as it prevents motor-vehicle lane sharing while trying to pass.
b) Highway Traffic Act to integrate bicycle lessons into the requirements to obtaining a driver’s license including eight hours of on-road experience on a major road that doesn't have a bike lane.
c) regular re-testing to renew driver's licence.
