Parmalat Canada’s comments: Regulatory amendment to

As Ontario’s largest dairy processor, Parmalat Canada welcomes this long awaited regulatory amendment. While the regulation was put in place at a time when the Blue Box System was inexistent and Canada still operated under the Imperial measurements system, Parmalat Canada applauds the Ontario Government for taking the necessary steps to modernize this industry and level the playing field. We understand and appreciate that there are those retailers and consumers who still would like the option of a deposit return program and we will continue this service where reasonably requested. We are pleased that we will be able to help Ontarians keep the province green and place their milk containers in with their other recyclable materials. This is a step
forward for the dairy industry as a whole as well as for environmental stewardship.

Parmalat Canada is pleased that the proposed amendment gives processors the flexibility to run a hybrid system wherein a retail deposit return program on milk operates in tandem with milk containers greater than 1 litre that would not carry any deposit and instead use the Blue-Box program. Parmalat Canada is also quite pleased with the choice the consumer will have and the
company’s ability to continue to provide high-quality Ontario dairy products for consumers.

In closing, we are confident that the Ontario government’s position in taking the necessary steps to modernize this system will ensure a greater recovery of milk containers sold in the province.

We look forward to the passage of this amendment to Regulation 344.
