Part of the proposed pit is within a source water protection area. The nearby wells supply a significant amount of the water for Waterloo Region. Contamination by an oil spill or other toxic waste could run into the well and ruin this source of our water. It is important to note that no other gravel pit in Ontario is within the boundary of a source water protection area - i.e. none have been allowed. Allowing this pit would set a dangerous precedent. The pit also will back immediately adjacent to a community. Those people will be subject to significant amounts of noise and dust and their property value will be impacted. These two issues alone should stop this pit from proceeding.
