I think that a later start date for bear hunting would lessen the chance of a cub being orphaned from its mother. A hunter cannot tell the difference between a male and female black bear. The sow does not always appear with its cubs. By starting the hunting season later it would mean that if the mother is killed the cubs might stand a better chance of surviving. When cubs are too young they will not survive.
Our ancestors hunted because they needed food. Some do it just for sport which is sad.
