It is always being said that the amount of salt being used in the winter is being reduced to lower ground contamination. I have driven on more snow covered roads in the last 10 years than anytime previously in my life. I have now invested in winter tires and I am okay with all of that.

What does bother me is that bylaws are also being introduced to ensure sidewalks are cleared within 24 hours of a storm whether it is snow, sleet or ice. For my city this bylaw went into effect 2 years ago. I have never purchased salt for my sidewalk previous to the last two years. Now I am going through multiple bags of salt to ensure the sidewalk is clear of snow and ice to avoid any fines. These bylaws are taking the salt from the streets and putting it on the sidewalks which still allows the salt to enter the ground water system.

I try to do my bit in saving the environment and it kills me to have to now buy and use salt to keep the sidewalks clear and bare.
