Dear Minister Yurek,

Thank you for consulting municipalities in the Provincial Water Quantity Management proposal. As you are aware, Climate Change is a critical issue and it is imperative that we all do our part in bettering the environment, while also protecting our water.

After having read the proposal details, it is reassuring to see that your government is committed to taking action to protect our water supply. While I am pleased that municipalities will be provided with the opportunity to have input when water-bottling companies are applying for a Permit to Take Water for a new water taking or increased amount of water, hosting municipalities should also be afforded the opportunity to have input on renewal applications.

The Town of Erin presently is a host municipality to two major water takers, Nestle/Ice River and Danone/Aquaterra. To date, they are each taking approximately 20% of their permitted amount, which can change at any moment.

On behalf of the Town of Erin, I strongly request that you amend the proposed regulations to say, “municipalities do have the ‘authority to consent’ regarding renewal requests of any existing permit to take water within their jurisdiction.”

In addition to this, local communities and hosting municipalities should receive a share of the revenue incurred from the water taking. This compensation would go back into the communities that are having their water source effected.

Sincerely,

Allan Alls
Mayor, Town of Erin
