I am in full support of this proposal. The elimination of the wildtake draw would greatly enhance falconry in Ontario. As an apprentice I have yet to receive a wildtake permit. This was my third year applying! I had to start my falconry journey in alternative ways!
I missed out on an important falconry tradition and that is trapping a wild bird. With this proposal all new apprentices will be able to gain valuable experience that will make falconry and falconers in Ontario the best they can be! Allowing all apprentices the chance to trap a wild bird will ensure that less captive birds are bought from breeders. If an apprentice learns that falconry isn’t for him/her they can easily release the wild bird no harm no foul!
Releasing successful wild caught falconry birds back to the wild will only help the representative species populations!
I am in full support for adding wild taken goshawks! I also fully support the decision to keep these permits under a strict draw and not allowing apprentices to enter the draw!
