I don’t believe mining exploration should be permitted in the Wolf lake area. Wolf Lake is surrounded by the world’s largest known contiguous ancient red pine forest. The old-growth red pines found in this area are part of a critically endangered ecosystem that is estimated to remain on only 1.2% of its original range. Issuing mining exploration permits puts the ecosystem at risk. Also, the City of Greater Sudbury’s official plan designates Wolf lake as “Parks and Open Spaces.” Under the GSOP “[d]evelopment is generally prohibited in public Parks and Open Space areas.
