The proposal to mine near Wolf Lake would have a plethora of negative impacts if accepted. Though mining is a large contributor to Canada's economy, it is not without negative impact. Mining in Sudbury has been shown to create a depauperate benthic layer in nearby aquatic bodies, due to the impact metals have on the reproductive abilities of fauna. Old-growth forests in particular demand preservation as they typically have stronger biodiversity than new-growth. Researchers have noted that the presence of heavy metals (typically from mining) tend to lower the diversity of both animal and plant life. There is also slower plant growth in areas where heavy metals are present. There are many other places where mining is possible, so it should be noted just how inconvenient it would be to mine around Wolf Lake. Environmental conservation (particularly water) should be a priority in Ontario, considering the disproportionate amount of freshwater we have. As Neil deGrass Tyson notes in an interview, apocalypse movies always seem to start with politicians ignoring scientists. Let's make an effort to avoid environmental apocalypse.
