My sister is a keen falconer. Falconers play an key role in monitoring and supporting raptor populations in the wild. By allowing more falconers to have access to wild birds, the Ontario government will encourage more conservation and a better understanding of the birds and their populations.
The approach proposed has been used successfully the USA and in other provinces. Ontario should learn from the positive experiences of these other jurisdictions.
Allowing apprentice falconers to trap their first bird of prey is a big step forward for falconry in Ontario. The apprentice can release their bird back to the wild at the end of the hunting season, and the birds will breed for the next season. This is a traditional falconry approach, and the impact falconry on the wild raptor population is de minimis.
Thank you for your time
