I have been an active falconer since 1991. Falconry has been for me a passion, as well as an excellent form of exercise.
I fully support the proposal (ERO# 019-1806). This proposal will bring Ontario on line with many other provinces.
The use of wild take has had no ill effect on wild populations in any of the jurisdictions that practice this.
As everyone is aware, it is habitat loss, and the indiscriminate use of chemicals and pesticides, that impact wildlife populations in a negative way. Falconers have a vested interest in seeing that raptor populations remain healthy, and indeed, they contributed greatly to the recovery of the Peregrine Falcon.
Goshawks are ideal birds for falconry purposes here in Ontario. They are best suited to the prey base we have in this province. Please join them to the list of other fine raptors that are already permitted for
wild take. It would increase the experience of falconry for experienced, licensed falconers.
Thank you for doing away with the draw system. We can now have access to a great resource, especially apprentices, who, in the past, had to wait for the opportunity to trap and fly one of our native species.
Falconry is noble sport. Thank you for allowing us to participate fully in such an ancient practice.
