While I applaud the principle of extended producer responsibility and the standardization of blue blox programs across the province, there are a few changes I would like to see in the implementation of these changes:
- a move away from accepting low-value recyclables like straws, cutlery, and plastic bags that are unlikely to actually be recycled and that contradict the incoming federal ban
- specific targets for the business and industrial sectors
- high, detailed diversion targets to promote reducing and reusing as priorities
- shorter timelines for implementation
- recycling standards that encourage maximum quality to be maintained
- ongoing consultation with environmental groups throughout the process
