It is important that going forward we hold companies responsible for the packaging they produce and it's proper disposal. We need Extended Producer Responsibility for plastics that doesn't provide loopholes. They must be held responsible for all packaging produced whether it is recycled, goes to landfill or ends up in Lake Ontario.
Packaging producers should not be able to get out of new policies by simply switching to compostable or biodegradable packaging. These materials are not easy to dispose of, the companies rarely provide the means of disposing of them, they are confusing to consumers, can't go in municipal or backyard composts systems and contaminate recycling streams.

The responsibility of proper disposal of these products should not be placed on the consumer and tax payer.

These new regulations must also include packaging produced and used by the businesses, institutions and the commercial sector which accounts for two-thirds of waste in Ontario.
They should also make sure that all residents have access to recycling at home in apartment buildings, condos, residential care homes and when out in public spaces. And that these systems are consistent - what I put in the blue bin at work should be the same as at home and at the park.
