Bill 197 (COVID-19 Economic Recovery Act), enables the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing to decide how land in Ontario will be developed, as dictated by a Minister’s Zoning Order. As an ecologist I am very concerned about this capacity to bypass thorough ecosystem reviews. With the increasing loss of biodiversity it is important to understand how habitat loss is accelerating the loss of biodiversity as well as the loss of arable land for farming. Some habitats are crucial for flood control and insurance companies understand the services provided by ecosystems for flood control and much more. The loss of habitat will cost money for individuals, businesses and society now and even more so in the long run.
