I am in favour of protecting the Paris Galt Moraine. I notice that this extension will protect water flowing into Lake Ontario. The Paris Galt Moraine seems fragmented at Eden Mills and Cambridge. Any protection of futher fragmentation would be beneficial. Adding more protected areas where fragmentation has already happened would benefit water quality.
Could the Greenbelt area possibly be extended further south towards Waterdown? I am not sure of the overlapping of the Niagara Escarpment Plan Area.
The overriding consideration of the protection of this moraine is water quality.
I am in favour of the protection of river valleys and feel that the 60m buffer needs to be increased to protect rivers from runoff and erosion.
The Greenbelt Act consistently refers to public transit and active transit as priorities. This should be priortized ahead of highway construction. We also need to consider affordable housing and how that intermeshes with public transit. We also need to consider impacts on climate change. Highway construction contributes greenhouse gases during its construction, promotes use of vehicles and removes vegetation that absorbs carbon dioxide.
We have seen during this pandemic that there is a lack of natural areas for humans to enjoy. We need to consider how to protect more conservation areas, trails and public parks.
