I am writing to express my opposition to repealing the proposed sections of the Electricity Act, 1998 and the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 that were introduced under the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009 to promote and prioritize the development of renewable energy. Because our entire planet is in a climate emergency and because Governments around the world are committing to undertake actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, prioritizing renewable energy is more important than ever. Canada has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 to 45% by 2030, and by 100% by 2050. While the 2030 target reduction is almost certainly inadequate, even that modest progress will not be possible if Ontario, Canada's largest province, does not prioritize producing additional energy only from renewable sources. We all need to take the current climate crisis seriously. Governments and our public agencies need to be part of the solution and not add to the problem.
I am very opposed to these proposed changes and to any action that knowingly increases greenhouse gas emissions through Ontario's energy production.
