Ontario continues to deal with the worsening impacts of climate change, and Conservation Authorities are the experts able to assess public risk to help ensure that the people of Ontario and their properties are protected from events like flooding, drought, and erosion. Any advisory committee may be made up of persons or groups with a stake in approvals. Decisions should continue to be made using science based decisions including engineered flood plains, wetland delineation and erosion setbacks designed to protect Ontarians from future damage or loss due to these risks. Anybody on these committees won’t be responsible for their decisions when properties are put at risk in the future. Insurance won’t cover their losses. Keep decisions in the hands of the experts that don’t have a hand in the game. There is already oversight from Municipalities through the existing system. The MZOs are clearly a disaster which will continue to allow building in areas meant to store water and protect all Ontarians from future flooding. Any further unnecessary oversight is clearly the fox running the henhouse.
