I have spent almost 30 years assisting the Ministrey of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Buildings and Development Branch, in raising the requirements for energy efficiency in the Building Code, as well as setting a regulation for determining a maximum level for CO2e emissions for each new project, and then assisting building designers and developers to meet and even exceed these requirements.
This was predicated on having a "clean" electricity grid.
All of this effort will be lost for those and many other buildings now constructed and operational if the carbon emissions from the electricity system are allowed to increase.
There is nothing more important for Ontario, Canada and the entire planet that continuing to lower our carbon emissions. Whatever the current Ontario government does today to allow these emissions to rise will have to be undone by future governments at even greater cost, even as we continue to face rising costs for property indurance to cover damage caused by floods and fires.
This cannot be premitted to happen.
