Clean Energy Credits should include the clean energy from heat pumps! Solar panels produce electricity from the sun. Renewable energy. Wind turbines produce electricity from the wind. Renewable energy. Heat pumps produce thermal energy from the air or the ground. That is renewable energy, too!
Thermal energy for heating and cooling buildings is MORE important than electricity (NRCan data (OEE 2019) say the thermal end-uses of space heating, water heating and space cooling consume 1,266 PJ a year (82% of the sector’s total energy use of 1,536 PJ) and release 54 Mt (86% of its total emissions of 63 Mt)).
The renewable thermal energy from heat pumps should receive Clean Energy Credits and indeed may HAVE to be awarded credits for us to reach our climate and GWG goals.
