Keep Napanee Great is a non-profit organization that is concerned with environmental and quality of life issues affecting residents and visitors of Greater Napanee and the surrounding area. We are concerned that the approval of this site-specific air standard for the Lennox Generating Station will raise the quality of life issues in terms of air quality and will further degrade the surrounding environment.

As it currently stands, there are already a number of industrial emitters in the area. The application does not provide us with confidence that those other emissions have been considered. This current application will be well over the new provincial standard for sulphur dioxide, and it is even over the old standard for sulphur dioxide. The facility also seeks to be over the standard for NOx and sulphuric acid. The cumulative effects of these emissions and other industrial emissions worry us, in particular, because of the impact on the air quality and the health of those in the area.

Keep Napanee Great is concerned about the increasing emissions from the Lennox Facility since OPG has stated that it may be in more use if the Pickering nuclear plant goes offline and the Darlington nuclear Power plants are refurbished. This may create a pressing need for the plant to be used more often and increase the number of times that the plant runs above the provincial standard.

In addition, we are concerned that there was no human health impact analysis. There are a number of people in this area, and their health and the impact of air pollution is a serious concern. Sulphur dioxide, in particular is a concerning pollutant, which is why the MECP has lowered the standard in the first place.
