I am dismayed at what effect the cancellation of the Cap and Trade Act may have on our effort to mitigate climate change. First of all is the time we will waste on such an urgent matter. Then there is the confusion on what Cap and Trade is all about. It is not a tax. It was a means to get corporations to do their part in reducing the effect of climate change by reducing their carbon emissions. The money the Ontario government was going to get from the Cap and Trade was to be used to finance actions that would further mitigate climate change.
I want the present Ontario government to act quickly to minimize the waste of time and resources Bill 4 will inevitably incur, I am upset that a reasonable and climate mitigation act such as the Cap and Trade is being terminated with no serious consideration given to what will replace it that would have similar or better results. What we essentially have is back to square one on an urgent issue on which we are way behind in our dealing with it.
I ask that you seriously reconsider your actions. Climate change is real and the time to deal with it in a timely fashion is short. There are many ways of reducing our carbon emissions, but eventually we must end our use of carbon emission energy. Cap and Trade was one good approach. Do not touch it unless and until you can come up with a more effective and fair alternative.
