I support the motion by Premier Ford and the PC party to move towards increasing regulation on large commercial vehicles. The government must be strict on heavy-duty vehicles and their associated companies as they are our biggest polluters on the roads.
However, I am very skeptical about completely scrapping the light-duty vehicle program. Obviously, it is deeply flawed as it currently stands, but why not allot some time and resources for a research and development period which could make the light-duty program more efficient and effective.
For example, equipment and criteria should be used that could provide an accurate picture of how much a vehicle is polluting. Also, there could be stricter criteria on heavy polluters such as old cars, sports cars, trucks, Hummers etc. Perhaps in a case where an individual or family owns more than one vehicle, if they could have afforded a cleaner option as their second vehicle then they face a carbon tax or penalty because of their choice to pollute more.
To avoid putting pressure on working Ontarians, if their vehicle is used for work (e.g. a pickup truck for a farmer) then they wouldn't face a penalty. Oftentimes the highest polluting vehicles are more expensive, and usually totally unnecessary for their owners to buy. We cannot afford to allow everyone to pollute indiscriminately as we face the looming and immediate danger of climate change.
