My grandparents built our cottage in the 1920's. Their doctor recommended that my Mother, who had had pneumonia 4 times in one year, needed to get out of Detroit for the summer. My grandfather built the house, the stone chimney, beds, dressers. They were not wealthy, but did everything by themselves. Mom did get healthy, and ended up having a large family, typical of the time. We were so fortunate to be able to spend time at Rondeau. There we basically lived outdoors. To this day, with most of us in our seventies, we walk every morning on the beach before breakfast. We usually carry a trash bag with us, cleaning the beach of plastic and other garbage that gets washed ashore. Later, we hike in the woods, enjoying the many flowers, birds, and other wildlife. We have been dazzled by the hundreds of butterflies gathering down at the Point before their migration south. We have marveled at the vultures kettling. There is no better place to see the Milky Way, and watch meteor showers.
Rondeau Park has inspired all of us. One sister lives in East Glacier Park, Montana, but can't wait to come home to spend some time at Rondeau. Many of my lesson plans for my seventh and eighth grade students reflected the wonders I learned in the Park, including astronomy, biology, botany, and geology. Hopefully, I was able to nurture in them the respect and love for our Planet that my whole family holds dear.
I know there's a large group of people with outspoken views in the Cottage Association, but they don't speak for all of us. We would certainly accept the lease terms set up for Algonquin . As third generation cottagers, we take our responsibility seriously for preserving and protecting Rondeau Provincial Park.
