With the end of emission testing for light duty vehicles, the big question we have is as of april, the vehicles that passed with a conditional which we assumed would be removed permanently from the roads in the following years need to pass another test or be repaired... Myself as a technician allowed these to go through knowing they would be finally off the road most of which were not road worthy...

Yes the newer cars should not need to be etested right away, as they should be in good working condition, but conditions change quickly, and if an engine is working or sounding as if it is working properly most people on the road will not fix a problem that is not effecting them , we have found on most failing vehicles they are not having repairs done and have no intention to as long as a pass could be made , any not ready fails have always been this issue with customers resetting codes to be allowed the pass

The other question is something else returning in its place, hopefully a yearly or bi yearly safety on all vehicles, simply put if a vehicle passes a legitimately completed safety it should pass an etest with no issues.

As a licenced mechanic and the emission repair technician at our shop I was proud of the extra test that was required for repairing LD vehicles as it was much more in depth and far more difficult than the trade exam to become an Automotive Mechanic in the first place. I am afraid this will be lost on many repair facilities which will not have the quality diagnosis and repairs available by Drive Clean

The quote i have kept hearing is that only 5% of vehicles being tested fail, that seems like not many, but the better sounding and accurate way of saying it is that 1 in 20 cars tested still fail.

Again .. Please invoke a legislation on vehicles to require a safety inspection every year or 2 to resolve our emission issues on light duty vehicles, our province of Ontario is one of the few places in the world where you can buy a vehicle, get the original safety done on it and then drive that vehicle without ever returning to a garage in the life of the vehicle being 5 years or 50 years.
