Removal and re-designation…

Removal and re-designation of Greenbelt land is unacceptable. It is the opinion of this lifelong Ontario resident that the housing crisis that this plan claims to seek to solve ought not and cannot be sustained by the rampant subjugation of lands to further fuel the urban sprawl that plagues this province, and indeed, nearly all of North America. The Greenbelt is coveted green space in a world where everyday we become more and more divorced from nature at the hands of the industrialism that this project seeks to perpetuate. The Greenbelt is land near and dear to us that is not only viewed from behind a fence, but is walked, farmed, lived, and connected with which, in the opinion of this writer, represents a crucial part of fostering and rekindling the relationship with nature that we all innately know cannot be severed. I need not cite the numerous ecological consequences that this project will undoubtedly have. The habitat destruction of numerous species that call the greenbelt home, many of whom are at risk, and the effects of replacing natural areas with concrete have on the deteriorating health of our inland waters and the reduced capacity for these areas to buffer runoff and sequester carbon I'm sure have all been made apparent by devoted individuals far more qualified than myself. My suggestion of rethinking the way we perform urban development and the laws that govern it would surely be overlooked due to the seemingly-indomitable western obsession with the car, the detached single-family home, and the infrastructure that supports these obsessions. With this in mind, I will summarize thusly: The removal and re-designation of Greenbelt land in the name of continued urban sprawl in unwanted, unwelcome, unwarranted, and unacceptable.
