While the notion of a one to one exchange of land area seems reasonable at first, it becomes obvious that this will significantly impact the green space immediately around existing towns and cities. The spaces are precisely the ones we need to preserve to prevent urban sprawl.
Development should take place in the many other areas of Ontario outside the Greenbelt.
This is in keeping with strong votes, in cities, such as Hamilton, in which the population overwhelmingly is in favour of maintaining, not expanding, existing urban boundaries.
Urban intensification within existing boundaries is the way we must surely go - not the increasing sprawl of low density housing.
To present any of this as providing low cost housing is also absurd. The last thing low income families need is housing at the limits of urban boundaries where public transportation is non-existant.
This proposal must be rejected.
