As it currently stands, Bill 23 is short-sighted and will result in irreparable harm to our province.
Bill 32 will drive low-density, sprawling development. We require medium and higher density solutions in order to address housing needs, while mitigating climate impacts and maintaining recreational opportunities.
We must maintain green development standards, which are crucial for lowering emissions from buildings (one of the top two sources of emissions) and allow conservation authorities to continue to conduct crucial watershed planning and protection.
The ecological values and functions that the Greenbelt and Oak ridges moraine provide relies on them being intact, and larger areas provide exponentially more benefits than smaller ones. Reducing their area undermines their ecological functions. Further, offsetting and engineering new natural areas and wetlands is very poor value for money, as these will never provide the same ecological value as the lands lost.
I am deeply concerned that the Ontario government is failing to protect nature, communities and the climate.
