The Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan does not permit the expansion of Settlement Area boundaries into Natural Core Areas or Natural Linkage Areas. Final!
Ontarians do not need to sacrifice environmental protection to address the housing crisis. In its 2022 report, Ontario’s Housing Affordability Task Force stated that ‘a shortage of land isn’t the cause of the problem. Land is available , both inside the existing built-up areas and on undeveloped land outside of greenbelts. Most of the solution must come from densification.' Greenbelts and other environmentally sensitive areas must be protected. We are in a CLIMATE CRISIS! We need nature based climate mitigation strategies, not Bill 23.
A policy of off-setting is being proposed to compensate, supposedly, for the loss of wetlands, woodlands and other natural areas in the Greenbelt as a result of development with the idea that these natural areas can be re-created or restored elsewhere. This is a fantasy . High-end housing must not destroy oak-hickory forests. We’ve seen it in Picton. Low income housing is a lie. We are in a CLIMATE CRISIS! We need all the existing mature trees for carbon storage.
