The greenbelt is there for a reason. It protects critical waterways, plant and animal species. It should not be added to ever-expanding city limits. We are in a climate emergency, and your solution is to destroy natural areas. This is contradictory.
The claim is that it is needed to build needed housing in the province, however, sprawling only serves to bankrupt our cities and does not actually help house the kind of numbers we need to house in the next 10 years. It has become abundantly clear, in the last week, that this was done as a favor to OPC party donors and it smells horribly of corruption and kickback schemes. The current government would not have been elected if this idea had actually been part of the platform, they do not have a mandate to destroy these green spaces.
Instead, we should focus on downtown infills, building more middle-housing inside of city-limits. Change the bylaws that force stores to have minimum surface for parking lots. Encourage high rises with ground floor commerce. There is a way to achieve our housing goals without, undemocratically, bulldozing nature to build urban sprawl.
