I support eliminating single unit housing in favour. Like New Zealand, minimum criteria on open space and setbacks could be applied.
The government needs to go further. New houses, particularly in greenfield areas should be required to be built to accommodate at least two units. They could even be designed for 3-units by having three stories and/or with a garage-coach house. Many homes are built as a single unit, and it is very expensive and the design may not provide for two units. For example, many do not have a separate access of stairs to the basement or in a location that make separation difficult. In Surrey, British Columbia most new townhouses, semi-detached and detached are built to house two units. For example, I have seen townhomes with bachelor apartments on the lower level (small kitchen, bed, bathroom).
There are many solutions to increasing housing, that do not require destruction of the environment, protecting less wetlands, removing parts of the greenbelt for housing, or permitting more severances in prime agricultural areas
