The Ontario government's proposed encroachment on the Greenbelt is unnecessary and unwise with respect to the need to establish sustainable communities, as defined by the United Nations (see link below). We need to gently densify the populations within our existing urban boundaries and create communities where people walk, bike, or take transit to most of their daily destinations. We need to dramatically reduce our dependency on the automobile. Sprawling communities, big highways, and single-unit dwellings with big yards are not appropriate, as they contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and our warming planet and represent excessive cost to the taxpayer.
