A solution must be found for the permanent occupancy of
the cottage lots, and a sale under Section 9(3) of the Provincial Parks & Conservation
Reserves Act (2006) as directed by Minister Jeff Yurek is the best way.
Rondeau Provincial Park was chartered in 1894 specifically for the purpose of cottaging.
The PP&CRA Regulations already confirm we're here until 2038.
Two previous short-term lease extensions were issued so we could talk about a long-term solution,
however Ontario Parks refused to follow the Minister's orders... so here we go again.
• We respectfully request assurance that Ontario Parks will actually meet with us this time around.
In 2019 Minister Jeff Yurek ordered a sale of the cottage lots to Chatham-Kent, this process was
started but then obstructed & halted by Ontario Parks bureaucrats in 2022 with little progress made.
• The decision ERO 011-1300 posted in 2010 states there will be "a different option for long-term
occupancy of cottage lots in Rondeau" yet this is being ignored by Ontario Parks.
The decision ERO 019-0907 posted in 2019 states there will be "an alternative option for long-term
occupation of cottage lots in Rondeau" yet this is being ignored by Ontario Parks.
The online petition seeking to end cottaging in Rondeau withheld vital information such as a net gain
in protected parkland as it didn't fit the petition author's anti-cottage narrative. It is possible that
many who signed this petition would not have signed had they known the truth.
The best interests of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent are being ignored by Ontario Parks.
The MNRF/MECP's own studies have repeatedly proven our community benefits the park's ecology.
The lot sale prices were independently set by Infrastructure Ontario as being fair to the province.
Only 0.56% of Rondeau will be affected by this transaction; 99.44% will remain entirely untouched.
