When it comes to organic waste collection I think it would be best to provincially streamline what items can go into the bin. As it currently stands this varies from one municipality to the next. The most common example would be the bag for holding the waste from the kitchen catcher. In Toronto a compostable plastic bag is acceptable however in Ottawa, residents must only use paper as the Orgaworld Facility here is not built to accept plastic of any kind.
The confusion is increased when Ottawa residents can still purchase compostable plastic bags at their local grocery store. They think that they are doing the right thing by using their green bin yet they are causing major issues down the line at the facility.
This ties into another comment about whether or not to even allow compostable plastic bags. Although they help to eliminate the YUCK-factor, they are also more expensive to run through the facility as they slow down the composting process. I think there needs to be a definitive stance one way or the other on compostable plastic bags. Is eliminating the YUCK-factor really worth the extra expense to Ontario tax dollars?
